"Give me your tired, your poor,Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

-Emma Lazarus,“The New Colossus”, 1880.

Liberty for the people is resisted by authoritarians and those in power throughout the world. Most often liberty must be fought for, sometimes with violence, other times with persuasion, but never does it come naturally. Authoritarians can be found in families, churches, schools, businesses, governments, and communities always seeking to have their own way over the choices of others. Some are sociopaths with no conscience. Some are self-righteous moralists. Others may be driven by their own fears and their fears become a tyranny over others.

This book is about that quest for liberty in this world of authoritarians. It is not intended to be a book of history, but it does contain a great deal of history describing the many crossroads where liberty had chances to prevail but rarely did. Isn’t the Constitution supposed to protect our liberties? What about the President, Congress and Supreme Court? Aren’t they supposed to protect our liberty?

What is liberty? Few people have given this much thought. What steps did the US founders go through in delivering a government that was designed to limit itself and protect the liberty of the people? Is Democracy effective in protecting the people's liberty?

How are liberty and equality, faith, family, human nature, responsibility, compassion at risk from attempts by authoritarians to control everything?

People of faith, especially Christians, may find the chapter “Liberty and Faith” particularly interesting. After all, God is the author of liberty.

What are our responsibilities toward a revival of liberty in our land?

Liberty is our legacy. Liberty is the promise of America. Liberty is our highest national value.

What people are saying.

"I really do not like to use catch phrases like “eye-opener”, but this book is an eye-opener. If you think you know what liberty is, you may be surprised to find you do not. I thought I did, and to some degree I may have. But not completely, not comprehensively. I also thought I had a relatively good understanding of American history, and I did not. Paul does an amazing job of breaking down the fundamentals of freedom, liberty, and the current state of our government for anyone to understand. There are many quotes in the book, some of which I have heard before, but did not know the context in which they were made nor the true philosophy of the person making them. I no longer think the same way about the Civil War or about the framers of our Constitution. I no longer think the same way about a lot of things. This book will make you think about your own views and opinions and you may be surprised at what you learn about yourself." - Danielle - Amazon Review

"Yearning to Breathe Free is a MUST READ book! It's very well written and so easy to understand. I found myself eagerly reading one page after another. Never in my life have I found a book so timely and important for the future of America. Buy several copies and give them to those you love." - Spike - Amazon Reviewer
